A 16″ X 32″ pre-made glass block unit can be purchased at the home improvement center of your choice.  Buying a pre-made unit not only saves time and the headache of building one from scratch but also are made square and flush at the factory.  Other things to remember at the home improvement center are:

With the removal of the old window complete, the do-it yourselfer should be looking at a clear opening in the side of a basement wall.  The board at the top of the opening is called a sill plate.  This is where you will screw the “C” channel into.  If the “C” channel needs to be cut down to size, it should be done now.  The material is a PVC product that is readily cut to size using a hand saw.  Care should be taken to position the channel correctly. It is best to position the “C” channel in the center of the opening and flush with the outside wall.  It isn’t always possible to install flush with the outside wall. That’s OK, just try to get it as close as possible.   Cut the batt insulation to fit in the “C” channel and to the width of the glass block, (aprox. 4″ X 32″) and set the shims in a handy place.  Two people are needed to set the window up in the “C” channel, insuring that the insulation stays in between the “C” and the window.  If the unit contains a window, make sure the window is right side out.  The window screen and weeps should be outside and a window, make sure the window is right side out.  The window screen and weeps should be outside and the locking hardware should be inside.  Place the shims under the window, keeping the window snug in the channel.  The torpedo level is now used to level and plumb the unit.  Use the vacuum to remove dust and debris from the opening, and then fill the voids on the sides and bottom with expansion foam.  Be careful not to over do it. A little goes a long way, and you do not want to completely fill the void with the foam.  As the foam expands, it adds “R” value and helps hold the unit in place.  Congratulations! You can now clean up and wait for the expansion foam to do its work overnight.

Upon returning the next morning, cut any excess expansion foam flush with the window.  Mix the mortar with water in the 5 gallon bucket to a peanut butter consistency.  Mortar is applied over the expansion foam and packed around the perimeter of the glass block with the margin trowel on both sides of the window.  This is the strength that holds the unit in place.  If the glass block is not flush with the existing wall, the sill must be angled to shed precipitation on both sides of the unit.  It will take a little practice to get the mortar right. Any Grand Rapids remodeling contractor knows, the less you play with it the more it will do what you want.  If the mortar “sags”, let it go and come back after its set up but still “green.” Shave any excess off with the trowel and smooth the surface.  Finally, seal around the “C” channel and the sill plate with silicone at both the interior and exterior for a watertight seal.  The mortar will set up and harden in the next 24 hours.  A sponge or a moist rag can take off any excess mortar that inadvertently got on the glass.

The first attempt is the faithful old plunger. A plunger works on the concept of hydralic pressure to move the blockage. The problem with this approach in a kitchen or bathroom sink is that the drain may not be the only outlet – there are often multiple drains and/or overflow connections which make a plunger useless in these cases.
The next step is to try and remove the sink trap. Once you get to this phase, you need to make sure you have a bucket and a few towels handy. If you had previously attempted to clear the clog using a chemical drain cleaner you need to be careful here as there may still be residew in the sink, pipes, or trap. Before removing the trap, make sure to drain as much of the sink water as you can.
Place the bucket under the trap and loosen the connection to the portion of the pipe leading down from the sink to the trap. By opening the down facing segment of the pipe first you should be able to confine the draining water to the bucket – if you remove the horizontal portion first you are likely to make quite a mess as the water drains in that direction. If the remainder of the water drains from the sink, you know your clog if further down the line. If the water does not drain, then you need to check the segment between the trap and the sink for obstruction. Usually a screwdriver or length of bent clothes hanger is sufficient to check and clear any blockages found.
Next check to see if there are any obstructions in the removed trap. Either take it to another sink and see if water flows through it unobstructed or use a length of clothes hanger to probe for (and remove) any blockage. If you found something blocking the trap, you should be all set. Re-install the trap and run the water. If you found no obstruction, it is time to search further.

So the sink and the trap are clear, what next?

This is where you may need tools that you might not have handy but it is definitly a job for the correct tool. Don´t try to explore the pipe with anything that might potentially be dropped, break, or otherwise become lodged in your plumbing – the idea is to correct the problem, not cause bigger problems. The correct tool for the job at this time is usually a plumbers auger (also called a snake). This is a long, flexible, springlike contraption that is “snaked” down into the pipe. You can purchase a small, basic plumbers snake at any home superstore or plumbing supply store and they are fairly inexpensive.
Push the auger into the pipe until you encounter a blockage. If you are using a manual auger, you may need to twist it to get around turns in the pipe. Once it reaches the clog, you twist it to “auger into” the blocking substance. If you have a fibrous clog, you will pull the auger back along with a portion of the clog – repeating as many times as necessary to remove it. For softer clogs (like grease) you may just force the auger through the clog and rely on water pressure later to help continue to remove the loosened clog.
If you are unsure that you have cleared the clog completely and you want to check before you re-assemble everything use a hose to run some water down the pipe. Run the water SLOWLY – you don´t want to find out the hard way that the clog is still there. Keep your bucket underneath the pipe while testing. If it is cleared, re-assemble your sink/trap and run your water for a while – make sure that your drain is working normally – if it is slow, you may still have a partial blockage.

One other potential solution is the water blaster variety of drain cleaners. These gadgets are usually very inexpensive and typically consist of a small rubber nozzle with a hose fitting on one end. The concept is simple, you stick the nozzle into the drain, hook it up to a hose, and turn on the water. The water pressure first makes the nozzle swell to fill the drain or pipe opening and seal/hold it in place. Then the nozzle forces water into the pipe hopefully clearing the block by building up pressure behind it. If you listen, you will hear the clog clear and water flow rapidly down the pipes

If a person is suffering from sinusitis he’ll probably feel discomfort from the pressure. This can make a person feel nauseous, dizzy, and create a headache. Once the sinusitis worsens, it will end up totally blocking the airways and will eventually cause sinus-induced ringing ears.

The sinus cavity (which is positioned between both ears) functions as a dirt catcher to prevent foreign objects from entering the lungs. If it gets irritated because of the dirt that it catches, it will result in swelling and exert the pressure to the ear drums. This pressure can make the ear drum react through ear ringing.

But why does pressure start to build? The pressure is created because of the pressing of the swollen sinus cavity. Pressure can also increase as you start to blow your nose to get rid of the mucous. That’s not the only reason why sinuses cause ringing ears. When a person is suffering from sinusitis, his nasal pathway is blocked. When the nasal pathway is blocked the ear canal also gets blocked and causes the disruption of the flow of sound into the ears. This makes the ear concentrate on the internal noise, which creates a ringing sound. Sometimes you may even hear the blood flowing with your heart beat.

Sinus ear ringing is a very painful and tedious condition – in addition to having difficulty breathing, you also need to deal with the ringing in your ears. So what can you do if you have both sinus problems and tinnitus?

Since it is the sinusitis that causes the ear ringing, the ringing will stop if the pressure is lowered. This can be achieved by using nasal sprays, decongestants and antihistamines. These sprays will reduce the inflammation of the sinus but you need to make sure you choose the right antihistamine. Some antihistamines aggravate tinnitus so while you may have decreased the pressure, the ringing may actually get worse.

So here’s the most important message if you frequently suffer from sinus problems and tinnitus: Be aware that decongestants and antihistamines can get rid of the pressure, but there’s a chance that these medications might actually make your ear ringing worse. The solution to this Duo riddle is as base as you’ve probably concluded: PRACTICE.  Really, that is hardly a secret, but it is the method to any form of success in Forensics.  The thing is to find ways to practice.  Just jumping into a no-contact maneuver and assuming you and your partner will be pros instantly is ridiculous.  Here are some tactics your Duo can employ to ease blocking:

Really do exchanges. If your Duo requires you and your partner to fake an exchange, such as a slap or a Jedi choke hold, one of the best ways to practice the move is to begin by actually doing it with your partner.  Not to say you should really hit or harm your partner!  No, be gentle.  But there is something to be said about physically interacting with your partner to master an interaction.  By physically interacting you and your partner will be able to practice timing and train yourselves into muscle memory mode.  Doing a move enough times will cause your body to memorize how it feels.  Back to the slap, if you practice at first by doing then you can mentally store necessary information: the height of your partner so you know where to strike, the feel of how much is appropriate force, the positioning your arm undergoes, which way your head spins when hit, etc.  After an exchange has been practiced and detailed several times make the transition of performing it Duo style.

Count it out. When a Duo calls for a ballet of actions, it might not be a terrible idea to actually time a motion.  Dancers stay in sync due to the miracle of counting; perhaps there is a spot where timing could work for your piece.  Have a set word, phrase, sound, etc. to act as the signal to begin counting from, and perhaps have other words or positions serve as markers/check points to stay together.  If your Duo does use this technique it is advised to count out loud in practice to ensure both of you are keeping the same time.

Start slow. Even professionals enter a new situation as learners.  Trying to block and time anything swiftly, even in Duet Acting where contact is allowed, is silly.  The only thing that will be accomplished is becoming frustrated and maybe getting a headache.  Begin slow.  Break a movement down into its components, and as your Duo grows in confidence gradually build by putting the pieces together and moving faster.  You will save time, and your sanity, ultimately.

Remain open. Though you might have a vision of blocking genius, it does not always translate to it working for real.  Or, there might be a mediocre move that can be revamped.  Always remain open to new suggestions and try new ideas.  Even utterly ridiculous ideas (within reason of course) can be brilliant once physically done.  You never know.  Hey, people thought the aeroplane was a ludicrous concept way back when.

Refer to the script! Always, ALWAYS refer to the script.  All Duo blocking should enhance and help tell the story.  Most blocking can be solved/created by re-reading and interpreting the text.

Variation. No one wants to look at your Duo facing forward, side-by-side, for the entirety of your piece.  Be creative and think of ways to add variety.  Even turning to a profile view at some point differentiates and holds audience interest.  Use your space effectively!  Just don’t go overboard.

Peripherals and sound. Use them.  You might not be able to directly gaze upon your partner, but you certainly can keep tabs on them by holding them in you field of vision.  Listening also gives you an idea of where you partner is (blocking has marks (designated places to be) and lines generally serve as ques for when to move and where).  Knowing where they are and what they are doing could be more then helpful with timing.

Certainly there are more tricks Duos have devised to help with blocking and timing.  These are just basic guidelines to help your Duo along.  The main idea though is to map out your blocking, memorize it, and practice until polished.  Generally, the same principle of any Forensics event.  Except you and your partner have the potential handicap of “blindness” and the inability to touch.  ‘Potential’ is the key word.  Do not let Duo limit you!  Duo is only as limiting as you allow.
